WENA Projects
1. Miracle Mile Traffic Violations
WENA Directors met with the SRPD Traffic Sergeant to obtain reports tracking the enforcement of violations on the Miracle Mile. A review of the records confirms increased citations have been issued. SRPD will continue their presence of traffic officers at this location.
2. West End Ave Beautification Project 2021/2022
At the end of 2021 the City gave WENA permission to improve the green strip on West End Ave. While the City is happy to weed whack once a year, we wanted to redo the sheet mulching and wood chips to eliminate the weeds that had taken over. It was over eleven years ago that we originally did this.
In between rainy days, we started the project with our Board members and many wonderful volunteers.
We were able to get two thirds of the project done in ’21, before that wonderful series of storms, and we are planning to finish the project this year. Then, our final step will be to seed with poppies and lupines.
Let us know if you are interested in participating in this or other beautification projects for our community.
3. New Additions to Our Protected San Rafael Lands
This fall three plots of land were added to our San Rafael protected areas. The lots are in West End, Dominican, and a piece that straddles Ross and San Rafael. They were purchased and/or donated to the Western Alliance for Nature (WAN), which has converted them from buildable lots to wildlife corridors. They will be protected in perpetuity, and so will never be developed.
Benefits include protection for the wildlife that depend on that space. Endangered species inhabit one of the lots and several of us have been working to ensure that the lot was not developed, but kept as it was. It finally happened, and we are so grateful!
4. Crime in the West End
The SRPD submits crime incidents to the national registry in a standardized format. This data is available to the public and law enforcement offices to promote crime prevention. The crime data for the West End is low, with the most common incidents reported as automobile break ins, theft of contents and catalytic converters. This crime data is available by visiting the SRPD website crime prevention section with a link to the crime activity log. See the Community Crime Map for more information.
5. Fire Safe West End
With the severe drought and associated impending fires we urge all our neighbors to practice defensible space. Comprehensive information can be obtained for hardening a home against fire embers, creating a defensible space, and fire resistant landscapes at the Fire Safe Marin website.
